Our Travel Specialists & Staff
The sales team at Wayland Travel (and our sister company, ATD - Adventure Travel Desk), is composed of highly experienced travel industry professionals. (We have an average of over 15 years in the business and over 10 years with the company!) We love to travel and live to travel and look forward to sharing our passion with you!
Management Team
Karen Schragle — President
Along with Ian & Marilyn Scott, I own Wayland Travel & ATD. I am a hands-on pro with 35 years of experience and a passion for excellence. I work with an outstanding team of colleagues to offer our customers a personal, prompt and professional travel planning experience. For me, it's all about doing business with whole families, seamlessly handling everything with a tight efficiency, yet casual informality. I greatly enjoy making travel and travel planning easy for you.
In recent years, faced with major industry changes and competition from new travel distribution channels, many travel agencies have closed and agents have left the business. At Wayland Travel, we never doubted that our busy, sophisticated clientele would continue to need our professional services and advice, now more than ever! We vowed to find the most difficult and time-consuming work to book and learn to do it well. We developed an expertise in finding hard-to-get space and in using frequent flyer miles and credit card or loyalty points in creative ways to maximize their value. We work hard at staying current with the latest trends and options in luxury travel including the best in suite accommodations, villas and high-end cruise ships and offer concierge-type services (tee times, spa appointments, theater tickets, and the like) to complete the package.
Ian Scott — Vice President
After many years as a Price Waterhouse partner in South America, I came to the travel business as a second career and found my true love: adventure travel and, in particular, travel to Africa, a continent I have visited almost 50 times. I can truly say that there are few people in the US who know the area as well as I do. As an inveterate traveler I have visited over 120 countries including such out of the way places as Afghanistan, the Arctic and Antarctic, Borneo, Burma, Ethiopia, Fiji, Guyana, Laos, Palau, Tibet, Timor, Tonga, Yap and Yemen. If you can catch me at home, I'd be delighted to share my experiences with you and refer you to the right agent in the office to facilitate the booking of a memorable safari or adventure tour.
Marilyn Scott — Secretary
I lived in South America for 13 years so this part of the world is a specialty for me. I speak Portuguese, French and some Spanish. Additionally, I have traveled extensively in S. Asia, particularly Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Burma and more recently India. I have been on many walking trips in Europe and find that to be a wonderful way to travel, seeing the countryside close up in the company of others who enjoy the same kinds of experience, eating spectacular food each day with no guilt! I have also toured a great deal in France, Italy and the UK, by car, train, barge and river boat and love to custom-design private tours throughout the continent.
Gail Hendricks — Manager F.I.T Services — Aussie Specialist
After a first career in healthcare, I entered the world of travel and have never looked back. I have been in the business as an agent and manager and owner for almost 30 years and have been with Wayland Travel for most of that time.
I love to research new parts of the world and create itineraries that take people off the beaten path to experience cultures and landscapes in an intimate and original way. My special interests lie in travel to Eastern Europe, Asia and Australia.
Paula Hoffman — Operations Manager & Master Cruise Counselor
I wear two hats for Wayland Travel. As operations manager, I make sure the business runs smoothly. Crunching numbers appeals to my organized side but I like wearing my "M.C.C." hat even more. To become a Master Cruise Counselor I had to study hard, take classes and sail on or inspect many ships. Hard work but someone has to do it! I have taken 51 cruises (that's a year of my life at sea!) and counting… I've sailed with most of the major cruise lines and visited 30+ countries. I fully believe that there's a cruise out there for almost every traveler and I would love to help you find the perfect ship and itinerary to match your needs.
Valerie Paul, CTIE — Adventure Travel Desk Manager
Through a lifetime of travel (more than 30 countries), I have developed a passion for exploring the world, especially the remote and wild corners of it. Exotic, active, "adventure" travel is my specialty.I'm told my face lights up when I talk about Africa… should bring in a mirror to check it out some time!
I'm a career travel professional, in the business as an agent and manager for more than 25 years and have been with Wayland Travel (and ATD) for more than half of that time.
I believe strongly in agent education and training and hold multiple "Destination Specialist" certifications and the new CTIE ("Certified Travel Industry Executive") designation from the Travel Institute. Promoting socially and environmentally responsible tourism worldwide is an important focus for me.
Mary Zimmer — Corporate Manager
I have been with Wayland Travel for more than 25 years. I am a hands-on corporate manager and love to apply my creativity and experience to working out complex international itineraries. I have assisted many small and mid-sized accounts in creating workable corporate travel policies that are easy for the travelers and agents to apply. When I have a chance, I also enjoy planning leisure travel to Italy and Asia and booking cruises.
Sales and Support Team
Joyce ("Jo") Barsanti — Leisure Travel Consuiltant
I have been employed as an agent since 1984. For many years, my career focus was on corporate travel. I worked as an on-site agent for many of the area's biggest corporations and thrived on the fast pace and complexity of business travel. When I was ready for change, I joined the team at Wayland Travel where I was challenged to work as a leisure agent and learn a whole new travel vocabulary. I have found my niche doing a little of everything. I have learned to navigate the world of frequent flier miles and I enjoy planning family trips as well as quick getaways. I look forward helping you plan your next dream trip!
Joyce Bukaty — Leisure Travel Consultant
Travel has always been my first love. After college I went to work as an Airline Hostess for TWA and saw a lot of the United States. I then went to work for Hallmark Cards as "Kaye King", and appeared on television around the USA and Canada promoting their products. (travel again). I took time off from travel to get married and have children. I then began my 30 year career here at Wayland Travel. I so enjoy figuring out the best answer to my clients' needs. Having traveled to every country in Europe, China, South America, South Africa, many Caribbean Islands and Mexico, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii, Dubai, Canada and Iceland I feel it a privilege to share the joy of adventure and discovery. There is an art to "serving your clients" and I have tried to develop this art. I can't imagine a more satisfying career.
Mrs. Mickey Cooperman, ACC — Travel Consultant/Accounting Dept.
When I came to Wayland Travel ten years ago to assist in the accounting department, I thought that was all I would be doing but I immediately caught the "travel bug"! My travels have taken me to many islands in the Caribbean, Hawaii, Italy, Greece, South America, the Baltic region and there's so much more to see!
Now my days are split between accounting and travel planning. I enjoy nothing more than working out all the details for that perfect cruise, all inclusive vacation or even a destination wedding! Ask me about some favorite warm weather spots and best cruise experiences.
Patricia Feige — Adventure Travel Consultant
Flawless adventures are my goal when assisting clients with their vacation travel plans. With my careful attention to detail, travelers can venture to the remotest corners of the world, confident of a seamless journey. Will it be Mokoroing at sunset in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, kayaking through Drake Bay in Costa Rica, snorkeling in the warm Indian Ocean waters off Diani Beach in Kenya or a peaceful getaway to relax on the beaches of Grace Bay in the Turks & Caicos?
With my previous experience as a corporate agent I'll give that same attention to detail to your air travel needs, whether you're traveling for business or pleasure.
Phil Gain — Adventure Travel Consultant
I came to work for Wayland Travel / ATD in late 2000.
I enjoy solving complex air routings, and planning trips for my clients to really fun and off-the-beaten-path destinations. I want to send you someplace wild! Whether it's a safari through Botswana's Okavango Delta, a motorcycle tour of Iceland, jet-boating in New Zealand, or a honeymoon tour of South Africa's Garden Route, I'll do my best to plan a trip you'll never forget.
In addition to exotic vacations, I have also planned numerous trips for missionary and humanitarian groups of all sizes, to some of the planet's most remote areas. Let me take the hassle out of organizing your team, and help free up your resources to do more good works.
Sherine Hayden — Leisure Travel Consultant and France Specialist
Travel has always been a way of life for me. I grew up in South Africa and ventured abroad for the first time at the age of 3 months. I have been trying to travel as often as I can ever since. To date, I have visited 61 countries and lived in 5 and I never tire of discovering new places. I have been in the travel industry for over 25 years, first on the airline and automation side and now on the retail side. I specialize in custom designed independent trips to Europe, with a special emphasis on the U.K., France, Spain, Italy and Greece. When time permits I enjoy booking African safaris, cruises, Hawaii and the Caribbean.
Debie Isroff — Dive Specialist and Leisure Travel Consultant
As an avid scuba diver I have traveled the world in search of the best dive destinations and truly enjoy sharing my experiences and expertise with you. I have toured countries and have dived oceans all over the world. Some of my favorite trips include exploring the Galapagos, Papua New Guinea, the Maldives and Thailand as well as Bonaire, Belize and St. Lucia. After over 25 years planning scuba vacations I know where to find all the great deals and am constantly looking to expand my knowledge base. I look forward to planning vacations that will "wow" long-time dive enthusiasts as well as introducing a new diver to a new destination! Not a diver? Don't worry I'll plan you a vacation that will keep you happily traveling across the globe!
Michelle Kenneway — Corporate and group Travel Specialist
Margie Kimball — Leisure Travel Consultant
A full life should be marked by special moments and memorable journeys and I love nothing more than helping people create those moments and memories. My greatest satisfaction comes when clients return and tell me I planned the "perfect trip"!
I have 18 years of travel industry experience and have now found the perfect niche at Wayland Travel selling all kinds of vacation travel. My specialties are family trips and honeymoons throughout Europe, the US, Mexico, and the Caribbean (my favorite islands are Bermuda and Anguilla… paradise found!) Whether you want an escorted tour, an elegant cruise, a fun-filled trip to Disney or simply a week on a quiet beach, I'm ready to help.
My wish list for the future includes travel to the South Pacific and Africa… and I look forward to sharing those discoveries with you too!
Samantha Smith — Quality Control and Administrative Assistant
I'm originally from England but have lived in the US for almost 20 years now with my American husband and thoroughly American kids. We love to travel and I'm looking forward to getting more and more involved in the business as the kids get older. For now, I'm using my understanding of African travel gained when I worked full time pre-kids to make sure all the I's are dotted and all the T's are crossed to make our clients' itineraries seamless.
Stacy Smith — Concierge Services and Documentation Preparation
I work part time in the custom itinerary department and thrive on doing all the behind-the-scenes work that makes for the perfect trip. Dinner reservations, spa appointments, tee times, fun filled activities for the whole family… all laid out in an easy to use itinerary. Planning is sometimes MORE than half the fun.
Kim Stewart — Travel Consultant
Having joined the company in 2010, I am the new addition to the Wayland Travel Family. I have been in the travel industry for 14 years and I have worked in a lot of exciting aspects of the travel industry including corporate, leisure, cruises, and groups. After many years of working in the Walt Disney World theme parks and for Disney Cruise Line, I am the new office "Disney Expert". I am putting all my previous experiences into my new role at Wayland Travel. Whether it's a family vacation, cruise, a romantic getaway, or a business trip I can assist with all the details.
Carol Walsh — Leisure and Adventure Travel Consultant
I have been a world traveler my whole life, having traveled to 42 countries and lived and worked overseas for more than 10 years (Hawaii, Pakistan, Australia, and Kuwait).
I work on both the ATD (Adventure Travel Desk) and leisure sides of the company, specializing in the South Pacific (especially New Zealand) and Africa (especially East Africa).
Every trip is an adventure. I like to experience off the beaten path places and enjoy people to people opportunities. One of my most rewarding travel experiences was when I joined a Habitat for Humanity Global Village building team in a remote Tanzanian village. I will never forget the people we met and the circumstances they live in.
Although, I specialize in Africa and New Zealand, I will enthusiastically arrange any trip you can think up. I just need your "wish list" and I'm off!
